Binggou Danxia Geopark is a photographer’s paradise. Sculpted by the forces of nature over millions of years, the now phallic shaped rocks cover an area of 40km in the middle of China’s Gansu Province. Combined with China’s ever famous Rainbow Mountains the two separate parks together form Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, one of the most unique national parks in the world. The land composition of compact sand and mudstone combined with millions of years of natural erosion created the brilliant red and white layers of rock and vivid sculptures seen today. The land composition of compact sand and mudstone combined with millions of years of natural erosion created what is now called a Danxia landscape. Danxia landforms are completely unique to China. The mountainous regions are characterized by brilliant red and white layers of rock and vivid sculptures that are most striking in the areas outside of Zhangye.
A day trip from the city of Zhangye is all it takes to experience the brilliance that is the thousands of spires and sculptures that make up this incredible danxia geopark. While the park is famous for its nature made creations of the Louvre and a gigantic stone camel, it’s the seemingly endless rock columns surrounded by the huge snow covered Qilian mountains that really steal the show.
You really do have to see Binggou to appreciate all its unique awesomeness.
