How To Visit Italy’s Amalfi Coast On A Budget: A Budget Traveler’s Guide

***This post may contain affiliate links.***

Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, and rightfully so. I mean who wouldn’t want to vacation on the beautiful Mediterranean Coast with colorful pastel houses and dramatic cliffsides? Sign me up.

The Amalfi Coast comprises a 50 kilometer stretch of coastline along the southern side of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula. The coast is known for its dramatic natural scenery, hidden beaches, and colorful fishing villages.

But as with all popular tourist locations, all that vacation beauty comes at a price. Visiting the Amalfi Coast is not cheap, but it doesn’t have to be expensive either. If you’re looking to experience all the beauty of the Amalfi Coast, without the expensive price tag, buckle up because we’re about to dish out all the budget travel hacks that will leave both your heart and your wallet as giddy as a toddler with a lollipop.

While the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula is what is technically marked as the Amalfi Coast, around here we don’t get caught up in semantics. The northern coast of the peninsula is honestly just as beautiful as the southern coast, so for the purpose of this post, when I say the Amalfi Coast, I’m referring to anywhere along the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the way let me show you how you too can travel to the Amalfi Coast on a budget.

How To Travel To The Amalfi Coast On A Budget

path-of-the-gods

Here’s the cliff notes version of this post. To truly travel the Amalfi Coast on a budget, you’ve got to cut your accommodation costs. To do this, stay in the towns of either Sant’Agnello or Vico Equense at the start of the Amalfi Coast and book a hostel dorm or an Airbnb.

To get around on the Amalfi Coast take a Sita Bus (local bus), to eat, cook for yourself (if your hostel or Airbnb has a kitchen), and to experience the area, take advantage of all the incredible free things to do on the Amalfi Coast.

And there you have it.

Just kidding, there’s a little more to traveling the Amalfi Coast on a budget than that. Let’s talk specifics.

When To Visit The Amalfi Coast

Spring/Autumn

The Amalfi Coast at its core is a just a bunch of beach towns, so naturally, the best time of year to visit the Amalfi Coast is anytime from late spring to early fall when you can actually go out and enjoy all that mesmerizingly blue water.

Summer is, of course, peak travel season, which also means peak expense season. So, yeah, probably not the best time to visit if you’re looking to stick to a low budget.

That leaves us with spring and fall being the best times of year to visit the Amalfi Coast on a budget.

How Many Days Should You Spend Visiting The Amalfi Coast?

Is forever an option?

In reality, I’d plan at least 4 days on the Amalfi Coast to really explore all the area has to offer. Just be prepared to never want to leave, I know we didn’t.

If we were to go back again, I’d definitely book us a place for the entire week.

How To Get To The Amalfi Coast

amalfi-drive

Naples is the gateway city to the Amalfi Coast. To get to the Amalfi Coast, first, take the fast train to Naples, and then from Naples hop on the Circumvesuviana, a local train that runs from Naples to Sorrento. From Naples to Sorrento and its surrounding towns takes 1 hour via the Circumvesuviana.

Train tickets from Naples to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana cost just 3.6 Euros. There are no assigned seats, no luggage storage, and no air conditioning on the train. The cabins are designed more like subway cars than a formal train car.

Amalfi Coast towns serviced by the Circumvesuviana include Vico Equense, Seiano, Meta, Piano, Sant’Agnello, and Sorrento. Sorrento is the last stop on the train line. To get to any of the other Amalfi Coast towns you have to get off the train in Sorrento and continue your travels by Sita Bus which you can catch from just outside the Sorrento Train Station.

Where To Stay On The Amalfi Coast

Watching the sunset from the terrace of our AirBnb in Sant’Agnello.

To get the best bang for your buck at a hostel or hotel, base yourself in either Sant’ Agnello, Vico Equense, or Sorrento. These are the cheapest Amalfi towns where you can stay on the Amalfi Coast in a beautiful cliff-side town with incredible views but forgo the incredible price tag.

If you’re down with AirBnb-ing it, you will have way more freedom in terms of where to stay in Amalfi. You can find affordable AirBnb’s on the northern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Vico Equense and Sant’ Agnello, as well as on the southern coast in Pianillo, San Lazzaro, and Ravello (towns closer to the famed Positano and Amalfi).

Another major advantage of staying at an AirBnb is that it gives you access to a kitchen so you can save even more money by cooking your own food. If you don’t want to stay in a hostel dorm room, booking an AirBnb is definitely your best option to find entire apartments and private rooms at an affordable price on the Amalfi Coast.

Plus, if you’re traveling as a couple or with friends, you can book an entire apartment and split the cost between everyone staying there. This makes your time on the Amalfi Coast even cheaper as now you’ve decreased your accommodation cost per night and still bought yourself a kitchen to cook and save money on food.

If you’re an AirBnb virgin, not to worry. Sign up here and get $40 off your first booking!

The cheapest way to get around on the Amalfi Coast for sure is by taking the local Sita Bus. You can buy bus tickets to any of the towns on the Amalfi Coast from any tabaccheria in the town you’re staying. You can find the Sita Bus schedule for the Amalfi Coast here.

The funnest way to get around on the Amalfi Coast, however, is either by bicycle or scooter. These will cost you about 30 Euros per day to rent vs. 10 Euros for the bus. Decisions.

Amalfi Coast Travel Budget

Alright, so we’ve broken down how you can travel the Amalfi Coast on the cheap, now let’s talk money.

How much do you really need to budget for your trip to the Amalfi Coast?

The following table is a breakdown of the cheapest you can reasonably make traveling on the Amalfi Coast while still experiencing all the area has to offer. The prices below are in Euros and each cost is listed per person per day, with the exception of the cost of an AirBnb, as that is listed as the cost of an entire apartment per night.

Ideally, if you are traveling solo, you should stay in a hostel dorm, whereas if you are traveling as a couple or with friends you should book an AirBnb and split the cost listed equally among each person.

The Cost of Travel On The Amalfi Coast

Hostel DormAirBnb
Accommodation2057
Food12.512.5
Transportation1010
Activities55
Total Cost47.584.5

Food cost in this table is the actual amount of money that Justin and I spent on food per person per day during our 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. We were staying in an AirBnb, so that cost is the result of a mixture of eating out and cooking for ourselves.

Transportation is based on the cost of traveling the Amalfi Coast by Sita Bus, which costs 10 Euros per person for a 24 hour ticket. Depending on when you buy your ticket in the day depends on how many bus tickets you’ll need to buy during your travels along the Amalfi Coast. To make sure there are no surprises when it comes to your budget, we’ve calculated the transportation costs at an even 10 Euros per person per day.

The cost of activities is mostly just a cushion in case you decide you want to do things that require entrance fees or guides you have to pay. An example of this would be visiting Pompeii or doing some activity like kayaking or cycling where you would need to rent equipment. Honestly though, there are so many free things to do on the Amalfi Coast that your activities cost could easily be zero.

In general, I would budget EUR 50 per person per day during your travels on the Amalfi Coast.
