What's Next? Plans for 2020
After completing our bike tour from Thailand to Italy in November of 2019, we returned home to the United States for the holidays and began to plan our next adventure.

Diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma at 28 | My Ocular Melanoma Story Part 2
Back in the US, the doctors were quick to diagnose my vision problem as Ocular Melanoma, a tumor pushing on my retina. I would soon be getting plaque brachytherapy surgery to kill the tumor.

I Have Cancer | My Ocular Melanoma Story Part 1
This is not a story I'd ever thought I would be sharing. 1 week after we finished our Thailand to Italy bicycle tour I went to the eye doctor and found out I had a tumor pushing on my retina. It was an ocular melanoma.

THE END: Italy Bike Tour from Ancona to Bari
We took the boat from Croatia to Italy and spent our final week of the tour cycling down Italy's Adriatic Coast from Ancona to Bari. After making it to Bari we rode one final loop to visit the tourist towns of Alberobello and Matera.

Albania Bike Tour: Into the Unknown
Albania, a country we've had colorfully described to us as the shithole of Europe, gave us a really interesting few days of riding. While definitely poorer than any other European country we've been to thus far, we really enjoyed our time there. Albania to us felt like a throwback to our time in Asia in all the best ways!

Cycling the Infamous Katara Pass, Greece: Best Views of the ENTIRE TRIP!
We left Meteora and cycled up the second longest climb of the trip, the Katara Pass. The climb was seemingly never ending, and very steep. It was one of those beautiful days where if the climb didn't take our breath away, the views would. We ended the climb with our most epic camp spot of the trip with views to die for before descending to the lake in Ioannina and finally crossing the border to Albania.

WE MADE IT TO EUROPE!!!: Incredible Cycling From Alexandroupolis to Meteora, Greece
This week we entered our first European country of Greece, and we could not be more excited. Or tired. We cycled 3 days to Kavala where we decided to book an AirBnb for a month and take a break to recharge. Bike touring had become a grind for us and Justin in particular was really burnt out from a combination of hours in the saddle and constantly fixing bike problems every day. Once we left Kavala we rode 6 days to the breathtaking rock formations of Meteora.

Cappadocia,Turkey: Magical Hot Air Balloons at Sunrise
After two bus rides from Erzurum we made it to Cappadocia, home to the famous fairy chimney rock formations and hot air balloons. This was one of Cara's dream destinations on this trip, and we had such a blast watching the balloons take off at sunrise. Unfortunately the balloon rides were way to expensive for us to actually go up in one, but even just watching them was such a cool experience. It wasn't all magical balloons and sunrises though, things took a turn for the worse when Justin got a stomach bug and Cara ended up losing our wallet, which left us scrambling for money to get to Istanbul to fly home for our friend's wedding.

Bike Touring in TURKEY: Cycling from Georgia to Cappadocia
This week we crossed the border into Turkey heading for Cappadocia. The ride started out beautiful as we rode by multiple lakes, but quickly descended into boring brown grassland. We were on a time crunch to get home for our best friend's wedding, so we ended up just riding 4 days to Erzurum and then taking a bus to Cappadocia. The best part of our time riding this week was meeting all the incredible Turkish people and experiencing the amazing hospitality of the people here.

GEORGIA Bike Tour: Beautiful Scenery, Broken Bike, & Rough Roads Cycling from Lagodehki to Turkey
We had a wild week of cycling across Georgia! It started out great exploring the incredible Lagodehki Nature Reserve in Lagodehki, then quickly took a turn for the worse in Tbilisi when we discovered that our bike was permanently rusted together! This means we are unable to adjust our timing chain, so unless we can get the bike apart, once this chain is worn out and falls off, we will be forced to end our bike tour :(. We tried for hours to get the rusted frame apart and ended up with a crumpled tube and a still rusted together bike frame to show for it. So, we made provisions for Bike Friday to make us new parts to the replace the rusted, mangled tubes on our frame and continued riding for now. Luckily the bike worked just fine, even over trying road conditions and we made it through the high mountains to the border with Turkey!

Azerbaijan Bike Tour: Cycling from Baku to the Georgia Border
While our week in Azerbaijan started out rough with hurricane force winds forcing us to hitchhike out of Baku, by the end of our time here we had absolutely fallen in love with Azerbaijan! We met the friendliest locals, and saw beautiful green mountains again for the first time in months. It felt amazing to finally be out of the desert!
